Biographies

 

RIOTOUS COMPANY is a crossover theatre of stories, music, pictures, poetry and dance.  

Riotous operates under the visionary eyes of Kathryn Hunter as patron, was founded by it's artistic director Mia Theil Have, with designer Luis Carvalho and composer NIkola Kodjabashia, and encompasses an eclectic mix of award winning artists and performers.

Within the last year Riotous co-produced the new hit musical PENELOPE X by Nikola Kodjabashia and Venko Andonovski (Balkanika Literary Award Laureate) with the National Ballet and Opera of Macedonia, continued SARHA collaborations with The Freedom Theatre in Palestine, created and toured internationally with the dance-theatre piece INSOMNIA a pas de deux drama for two girls and a piano man created in collaboration with Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium, directed by Tage Larsen from Odin Teatret.

Upcoming  productions include BLIXEN directed by Kathryn Hunter, UNQUIET, a new opera for teenagers devised by the RPS AWARD winning creative team behind WE ARE SHADOWS (5* The Times), and SCHERZO a piece for piano and stick directed by Tage Larsen from Odin Teatret.

TAGE LARSEN was born in 1949 in Randers, Denmark. He began his career at Odin Teatret in 1971 and has acted in 15 of Eugenio Barba’s main performances as well as teaching and directing performances worldwide. In 1987 Tage created his own company, Yorick, and spent ten years away from Odin Teatret, teaching at the Nordisk Teater Skole in Århus and working as a freelance actor with Teater La Balance and Cantabile 2. In 1997 he returned to Odin Teatret. He still acts and directs performances outside Odin Teatret and gives workshops for actors all over the world. He regularly creates and directs the main performance during Holstebro Festuge (Festive Week) and has directed ‘Madame Bovary - Downtown with Anna Lica’ (Denmark); ‘Ali og den forunderlige ånd’ with emigrants and refugees (Denmark); ‘The Starry Messenger’ with Donald Kitt (Canada); ‘Bim Bum Bang!’ with Elena Vanni (Italy); ‘Lady Swettenham with Sabera Shaik of Masakini Theatre Company’ (Malaysia); ‘Sancho Panza e non Chisciotte’ with Mario Barzaghi of Teatro Dell'Albero (Italy); ‘Othello’ with Masakini Theatre Company.

 

MIA THEIL HAVE is the Founder and Artistic Director of Riotous Company. Her next upcoming performance as an actor will be ‘BLIXEN’ directed by Riotous Company Patron Kathryn Hunter in spring 2015. Mia formed part of ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology) and the core ensemble at Odin Teatret in Denmark (2003-7), acting in four of Eugenio Barba’s main performances including Ophelia in ‘Ur-Hamlet’ at Elsinore Castle in 2006.  

Theatre Direction includes: ‘Penelope X’ (National Opera and Ballet of Macedonia), ‘Sarha’ (Guimaraes 2012 European Capital of Culture and The Freedom Theatre Palestine), ‘Bodas de Sangre’ (Havana International Theatre Festival, Cuba), ‘Carnival over the Rainbow’, ‘Feast Kakhulu’ (Hilton Arts Festival in South Africa), ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ (Aarohan Theatre, Kathmandu and 14th Bharat Rang Mahotsav Festival, Delhi), ‘We are Shadows’ (Spitalfields Music Festival, RPS Award, 5* The Times), ‘White Suit’ (GDIF 2012 Greenwich Festival), ‘The Third Man’ (Secret Cinema, Farmiloe Building). As a director she was selected for ‘ eatertreffen', Berlin 2009, 'The Operating Table', Royal Opera House 2009, and received the prestigious RPS Award together with the ‘We Are Shadows’ team in 2011. 

In the UK Mia has collaborated with Helen Chadwick and Steven Hogett (Dalston Songs, Royal Opera House, ‘War Correspondents’, National Theatre Studio), Walter Meierjohann (‘Kafka’s Monkey’, Young Vic and international tour 2009-15, 'The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui’, Liverpool Playhouse, Romeo & Juliet’, HOME Manchester), and Mia is currently reviving Told by an Idiot’s ‘My Perfect Mind’ as an Associate Director to Kathryn Hunter. 

 

NIKOLA KODJABASHIA is considered to be one of the most eminent representatives of the Balkan and East European musical avant-garde and composer of 4 critically acclaimed albums. Nikola has scored music for numerous internationally acclaimed and award winning theatre productions in the UK and internationally. 

Theatre includes: ‘Bacchai’ (Sir Peter Hall, National Theatre), ‘Kafka’s Monkey’ (Young Vic, world tour), C.A.T.S. Awards 2011 multiple winner ‘The Three Musketeers and The Princess of Spain’ (Dominic Hill, Traverse Theatre), C.A.T.S. 2014 Awards multiple winner ‘Crime and Punishment’ (Dominic Hill, Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre), ‘Scorched’ (Old Vic), ‘Hecuba’ (Jonathan Kent, Donmar Warehouse).

Other commissions include scores for La Biennale di Venezia 2004, BBC Singers 2010, numerous scores for BBC TV and Radio 2005/10 as well as The National Theatre 2002/3. His music is released by ReR, described by the Guardian as “one of the most adventurous and coherent of avant-rock labels.”

IRENE CIONI is an Italian-born London-based dancer and actor. Irene trained at Scuola Del Balletto Di Toscana and Theatre School Of Amsterdam (2000-04). For the past 10 years she has worked professionally as a performer and dance maker between Italy, Denmark and England. She co-founded Hopballehus Ensemble devising and performing large-scale theatre works, which toured in Norway, Denmark and Argentina. In London her dance work ‘Aquarium’ was defined by the press as 'simple yet exquisite; a satisfying, fresh and forward thinking work', The Place. As an actor in U.K she works in commercial, viral, film and video amongst others with directors Paul Gay, Cathy Sheehan, Eliza Schroeder, Adam Coop; she is an associate of Riotous Company performing in ‘We Are Shadows’ (RPS Award 2012) and Insomnia. She perfomed with interactive theatre Secret Cinema's ‘The Third Man’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘Prometheus’ ('we long to hear her lilting Italian accent once more' Hollywood News) and Pirandello’s ‘Six Characters in Search of an Author’ at The Rose Theatre.

LUIS F. CARVALHO attained first class degrees with hons. in Fashion Design and Technical Arts Design from Central St Martin’s College and Wimbledon School of Art respectively. Luis has since worked extensively in theatre and opera throughout the world. Most recent projects include collaborations with Sophie Gilpin - 'Romeo & Juliet, Rose Theatre Kingston; Mia Theil Have - 'Penelope X' National Opera & Ballet Macedonia; The Collaborators - 'I Do' G Noc Noc 2013; Bruno Ravella - 'Giulio Cesare', Stand Moutier; Mia Theil Have - 'Sarha' Guimaraes Capital for Culture Europe 2012; Robert Carsen - ‘Turn of the Screw’, Theater an der Wien; Mia Theil Have - John Barber ‘We are Shadows’ Spitalfields Music Festival. Associate collaborations with Paul Brown include: ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ 2012 UK Tour, 'Don Giovanni' Glyndebourne Opera Festival, 'The Fairy Queen' Glyndebourne Opera Festival, 'As You Desire Me' The Playhouse Theatre; 'Lucio Silla' Santa Fe Opera.
