A note from Artistic Director Jez Bond

Park Theatre is a registered charity (number 1137223). We believe that theatre should be accessible and welcoming to everyone and it’s our mission to provide affordable tickets and keep our doors open to the community throughout the day.

It costs around £1m a year to keep Park Theatre operating; and we receive income of only £700,000 through rentals, box office and our cafe bar, leaving a £300,000 annual shortfall. The only way to make this up, without raising prices or cutting operating hours, is through fundraising – and as we’re not in receipt of government subsidy we rely on private donors, grant-giving foundations and one-off events.

Sir Ian McKellen is kindly donating his time to support us; and there is understandably a huge demand to see the show. The reason for our increased prices is to maximise our fundraising from this week. The more we raise the stronger our ability to present affordable and accessible theatre throughout the year, to keep our doors open to the local community and to work on vital projects including Migrant Voices (with refugees) and the Reminiscence Project (for those affected by dementia and their carers) as well as with underprivileged young people through our partner schools and colleges.

Together we’re making Park Theatre stronger – so that one day we’ll be able to produce a show with a huge star and not be forced to use it as a
fundraising event, but simply part of our affordable programme. I must stress that we do not condone the ticket touting websites who have been selling our tickets for £500 each; that rather defeats the purpose of the event: which is to raise money to support our charity - your neighbourhood theatre. Thank you.
