2011 - THE YEAR OF THE BUILD

by Jez Bond

Usually in the first week of January the new year particularly jars when one writes the date. Today, however, it seems quite natural. I suppose it’s a result of all our forward planning. In my mind I’ve already plotted the first half of 2012.

As avid readers can tell from my lack of online activity since Dec 22nd I did indeed manage to have a few days entirely off and, full of turkey and mince pies, refrained from sneaking on to the computer.

Today it’s bank holiday Monday and I am certainly not missing the crowds on the underground – a perfect ease back in to the swing of things. It’s the first day of rehearsals for Sondheim’s ‘Company’ which I am associate directing at the Southwark playhouse. I don’t suppose many people know what that means – and to be honest it’s different in every case. Our intention is that I will attend rehearsals two or three days a week to cast an overall ‘outside eye’ on the show and occasionally run some sessions on the scenes while Joe Fredericks, the director, works on other sections. It’s going to be fun to get stuck in to rehearsing with the actors. Whilst working with the architects and design team on building the theatre is fantastic – and the biggest and most exciting production of my life – it’s a very different process…

Just finished the day. The ensemble is great and full of talented, experienced actors. I am looking forward to seeing the show begin to take shape over the next few days.

According to Chinese astrology it’s the year of the White Rabbit but for us it’s THE YEAR OF THE BUILD… so remembering the biggest show of all, 2011 is going to be a very important year for us as the dream becomes a reality!
