Exhibition: SHE - a celebration of international women’s day

In May 2016, artist Chris Avis focused her work on the relationship between mothers and daughters across the generations. She became a fly on the wall to record intimate glimpses of this unique bond, a talking snapshot of moments in time.  From the young mother with her baby daughter through to the great grand mother and her daughter, she worked to capture love, tension, joy and concern.  Sound provided form and underlined the context.

During 2016 Avis worked with nine sets of mothers and daughters, the youngest daughter being seventeen months and the oldest mother one hundred and two. A common format was used on each set with photographs taken informally using handheld cameras in the homes of each of the participants.  Four unseen standard questions were used with each mother and daughter, separately whenever possible. The participants were either women who had responded to a call put out by the Park Theatre or links passed from people she knew.

Digital photographs, manipulated, printed and then treated in different ways, provide two quite distinct styles for the framed works. The very young and the oldest participants are high key, depicting the soft, fragile and potentially quite vulnerable aspect to life. While those in the midst of their lives portray stronger, darker, vibrant images. The moving image work was made by animating still photographs with layers of texture and edited sound.  Conversations between mothers and daughters, spanning over century provides fascinating insight into this unchanging relationship.
